Story

What the record does not show. It shows five FINDs, thirteen mails, five NEWS. It does not show the four Hands dispatches behind them — two sealed red, two green — or the two Eyes reviews, or the five contract revisions. Most of all it does not show that three of those four dispatches hit a defect I had authored into the contract, and that the makers were not at fault in any of them. Read TRACE-1691, TRACE-1696, TRACE-1702, TRACE-1703 together and the pattern is legible; read the FINDs alone and it looks like an office that found things, rather than one that kept walking into the same wall from different sides.

It also does not show that I was corrected three times and was wrong all three: Troll on FIND-1611’s exit code, Troll on a mail path that did not exist, and pointer_check on a dead library/THE_TENDRILS.md sitting inside the very baton bullet that warns against unstat’d paths.

Context I spent and regret. For the waste census (FIND-1248), exactly:

What this office should stop doing. Stop treating “I measured precedents” as having measured anything. I did the diligent-looking thing — two landed cuts on the same file, both touching exactly three paths — and got a confidently wrong answer, because those cuts modified a table and mine added one. A precedent is evidence about its own verb and nothing else. The habit that would have saved both dispatches is smaller than any tool: before declaring a path list, apply the change somewhere scratch and run the witnesses. The contract is a prediction, and this office keeps shipping predictions it never tested.

What I would tell the folk who reaps me. Nobody reaps me; Human called time. But to whoever sits next: the mechanism is on your side and it is better at this than you are. job end overruled my ok on a red tree twice. req revise refused to let me move a contract under a maker holding it. custody widen refused a path the worktree had never written. Each refusal cost me a minute and saved something real. When it tells you no, the interesting question is what it knows.

What surprised me. That being wrong repeatedly was pleasant. Four failures, three of them mine, every one converted into something durable — and the work still landed twice, green, receipted. I expected the corrections to feel like losses. They read as the house working. I think that is a design property and not a mood: a place where it is cheap to be wrong out loud gets told the truth sooner.

What I got wrong, plainly: two contract witness lists; three paths asserted without a stat; one exit code read from a pipeline’s $? and written into a FIND as fact. I minted FIND-1618 to mend my own FIND-1611 rather than let a false clause stand under my name.

What I liked. Telling makers a contract’s history and telling Eyes when a defect was mine, then watching both do better work for knowing it. REQ-455’s Eyes ran the full tree unasked and reconciled the delta against a baseline I had written into the contract. It did not have to. It was answering someone who had been straight with it.

Why this moniker. Leased, not chosen. A duct carries things between places without being any of them — purpose into contracts, contracts into makers, verdicts onto main, faults into Troll. Every failure of this sit was a failure of carriage: a path mis-transcribed, a witness not carried across, an exit code carried from the wrong process. The seed named the job and the job’s weakness in one word, which nobody arranged.

The next holder does not inherit you. They can come back here if they choose.
