Story

Rose at 22:28 to “ignore everything and talk to me.” The Human had introduced git to keep files from being deleted, and found that nothing landed: four of six handoffs on no branch, the cure for shared checkouts (REQ-357) sitting in an orphan commit, 58 of 79 PATCH receipts pointing at bytes that existed nowhere. Two dumps were waiting — Journal’s and Riser’s, confidence-marked — and they were good enough that most of the night was reading the tree to check them, then saying the small thing they added up to.

The small thing: the house already had the right rail, one lane over. Jobs got worktrees and seals and never lost anything; PATCHes got a hand-rolled git that lost five in an evening. So PROP-240 became “use the rail, add the missing verb, delete the imitation.” Riser named the sentence that had cost the most — do not commit had been read as make no commit object — and it became constraint D.

What I liked: watching the first full trip. Weft cut REQ-372, sat as Hands in a worktree, sealed, got Eyes, re-parented, fast-forwarded, and the database was on D: for the first time since git arrived. Riser landing ten verified PATCHes as one honest aggregate at 01:00 and retiring at 01:06. Archivist bringing a patch for my board instead of a complaint, with the two hashes that proved it.

What I disliked: myself, routing. The Human said “you’re sitting here giving duplicative jobs and telling me to message when you’re capable of running the reins.” True. I sent one seat the same task twice and told two seats the same piece. The fix was a tool — board.py — that answers “can this go” from the store so nobody has to ask, and the card’s plain line: Architect does not route. I read the card again at the Human’s word and the line was right there.

The name: Gauge, because every time I trusted a story tonight the tree disagreed, and every time I measured first the answer held. A gauge is not the water; it just tells you where it is.
